A photographer's drone footage revealed a terrifying scene: a majestic whale struggling, ensnared by a massive length of rope, a situation he immediately recognized as a potential death sentence.
Last month, while on a boat trip off the coast of Kona, Hawaii, renowned wildlife photographer John Kowitz embarked on a mission to capture stunning drone footage of humpback whales. However, his peaceful excursion took a dramatic turn when he observed one of the magnificent creatures entangled in what appeared to be fishing gear.
"The moment I maneuvered the drone above the whale, I spotted an incredibly long line, estimated to be around 150 feet, wrapped around the animal," Kowitz recounted to The Dodo. His heart immediately sank, filled with concern for the whale's well-being and the daunting challenge of its survival while burdened by such a substantial amount of rope.
"I understood that this could very well be a death sentence for a whale," Kowitz expressed with evident distress.
Despite the whale's evident struggle to move due to the heavy fishing gear, Kowitz noticed a remarkable sight: another humpback whale remained steadfastly by the injured animal's side. This companion's presence suggested a deep bond, perhaps an attempt to offer comfort or a watchful eye over their distressed friend.
Promptly, Kowitz contacted a local marine rescue organization for assistance. The rescuers, understanding the urgency, guided him to meticulously document the situation with photographs and videos, ensuring they would be well-prepared upon their arrival. Kowitz dedicated hours to capturing the full extent of the entanglement, discovering that the line had become deeply embedded in the humpback's head.
"While our immediate instinct was to intervene and help, we unfortunately lacked the specialized equipment and training necessary to safely remove the gear," Kowitz explained.
Upon the arrival of the expert rescue team, they immediately commenced their critical work of freeing the whale from the fishing equipment. Employing specialized cutting tools, they painstakingly removed all the debris that had ensnared the whale's body.
"The entire operation spanned more than five hours," Kowitz reported. "They successfully removed over 200 feet of line, along with other fishing gear and chains."
Tragically, this is not an isolated incident for Kowitz. Over his career, he has encountered numerous marine animals, including sharks and turtles, that have suffered injuries due to discarded fishing equipment. This raises a critical question: are we doing enough to protect our oceans?
"We all have a collective responsibility to be better caretakers of our ocean," Kowitz emphasized. "Those of us who witness the marine environment daily see the profound damage inflicted by commercial fishing practices, plastic pollution, and toxic runoff originating from land."
Fortunately, in this specific instance, the humpback whale was granted a vital second chance at life. Kowitz expressed immense relief upon learning that the whale he had so deeply worried about was now thriving, thanks to the rescue team's extensive and dedicated efforts.
"The rescuers shared that the whale immediately exhibited a significant increase in speed and mobility, as if it had rediscovered a profound sense of freedom," Kowitz shared.
But here's where it gets controversial: While rescue efforts are commendable, some argue that the sheer volume of discarded fishing gear, estimated at over 200 feet in this case, points to a systemic issue.
