Bridgerton's Luke Thompson urges fans to give Benedict 'grace' over Sophie blind spot ahead of series 4 part 2 release
In a recent interview, Luke Thompson, the actor behind Benedict Bridgerton, has appealed to fans to show his character some understanding and 'grace' as he grapples with a significant blind spot in his storyline. The fourth season of the Netflix hit series revolves around Benedict's developing relationship with Sophie Baek, played by Yerin Ha, who is the enigmatic Lady in Silver. The story unfolds after the couple's initial encounter at Violet Bridgerton's lavish masquerade ball, where Sophie captivates Benedict with her silver mask before vanishing at midnight, leaving him in pursuit of the elusive woman.
However, the twist lies in the fact that when Benedict meets Sophie again in real life, he fails to recognize her, despite rescuing her from a dispute and spending time with her at My Cottage and his mother's house. This has left many viewers questioning the plausibility of his character's actions.
Thompson, however, encourages fans to empathize with Benedict's character flaws, stating, 'I think we need to give Benedict a little bit of grace... Because he is flawed. And I think we all have blind spots.' He further elaborates, 'Everyone will have something that others know about them but they haven't figured out about themselves.'
The actor also hints at the complexity of Benedict's character, suggesting that his inability to connect the dots is not just a plot device but a reflection of his struggle to reconcile fantasy and reality. Thompson adds, 'I think he can't square fantasy and reality. That's the whole problem with his character. He can't join all the dots and put it all together, because that'd be too scary. And hopefully he will in part two.'
Season four of Bridgerton has taken a more overt Cinderella-inspired approach, with Sophie portrayed as an overworked housemaid and the illegitimate daughter of an earl, infiltrating high society for one enchanted evening. The underlying question, however, remains: can their relationship withstand the rigid class structures of the Ton?
Part Two of Bridgerton Season Four Part Two is set to be released on Netflix on Thursday, February 26. Part One is currently available for streaming.
