Agentic Commerce & Crypto: PayPal & Google Reveal the Future of AI-Driven Payments (2026)

The future of commerce is set to undergo a transformative shift, and it's all about the rise of agentic commerce powered by crypto. This is the bold vision shared by senior leaders at PayPal and Google Cloud, who took to the stage at CoinDesk's Consensus Miami conference.

In a world where AI agents are becoming increasingly prevalent, the traditional financial system simply cannot keep up. As Richard Widmann, Global Head of Web3 Strategy at Google Cloud, put it, "An agent cannot get a bank account." This is where crypto steps in as a machine-readable interface for payments, offering a seamless and secure solution.

Google's Agentic Payments Protocol (AP2) is a key development in this space. Widmann highlighted the importance of open dialogues and standards, comparing AP2 to the x402 internet-native payment standard. By donating AP2 to the FIDO Foundation and partnering with over 120 companies, including PayPal, Google is laying the foundation for a new era of commerce.

May Zabaneh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Crypto at PayPal, sees agentic commerce as the next logical step in the company's evolution. With its stablecoin PYUSD, PayPal is well-positioned to facilitate this shift towards globalization, AI-native experiences, and tokenized assets. Zabaneh emphasized the need for merchants to adapt, highlighting the growing AI agent traffic on their sites and the importance of machine-readable catalogs.

One of the key challenges in this emerging landscape is liability. Who is responsible when an AI agent makes a bad purchase? This is a question that the industry is grappling with, as highlighted by Zabaneh. Widmann suggested that multi-party custody, where an agent holds only a shard of the private key, could be a potential solution. This design ensures that an agent cannot unilaterally move funds, adding an extra layer of security and control.

When asked about their biggest concerns, Widmann and Zabaneh highlighted the need to onboard agents into the existing capital markets and infrastructure. This is a complex task, requiring a delicate balance between innovation and integration. Zabaneh, however, is optimistic, stating, "I can't wait for agentic to help make my life easier."

As we look towards the future, it's clear that agentic commerce is not just a possibility but a probability. The combination of AI and crypto is set to revolutionize the way we buy and sell, offering a more efficient, secure, and globalized experience. This is a fascinating development, and one that I believe will have a profound impact on our daily lives and the economy as a whole.
